Is there a christian organization like world vision that allows you to donate more than just money?
Q. I want to sponsor a child in Sri Lanka. I heard of world vision but i looked on their web site and all you can do is send $30 a month to the child. I was wondering if there is another Christian organization that would allow me to donate money, clothes, and toys to the child and maybe even write letters to them once and a while. is there any like that out there?

A. World Vision s Child Sponsorship program is much more than just sending money off every month. When you sponsor a child, you have the opportunity to help change the life of a child, their family and community. We ensure that each child has only one sponsor. However, many people choose to sponsor more than one child. As a sponsor you ll have the chance to write to your sponsored child or even visit them to see firsthand the improvements that have occurred because of your support. When you become a child sponsor you will receive a picture folder with photo and details of your sponsored child, and information about their country. You also get an annual progress report on your sponsored child, with an updated photo and information on… [cont.]

Do the World Vision sponsor children even get the money?
Q. I was just wondering when sponsoring a world vision child, do they actually get the money, and if so what percentage goes towards the child. Also has anyone had any experience with sponsoring a child? Thanks.

A. I wouldnt reccomend sponsering a child through world vision for these reasons; - Unsure about how much of the money actually goes towards the child - Unsure about who uses the money eg parents - When the child becomes an adult sponsering for them stops- complete abrupt change of life and unable to cope on own - Sponsering one child may cause jealously in a village where one child may recieve money for food while other children are starving and unable to get sponsered -sponsering a child doesnt really help them or thier community in the long run its only a short-term solution with little impact in the long haul There are plenty of organisations which actually go out to villages using donations to build sustainable communities that are… [cont.]

If you won $7000 on the radio would you give it to World Vision instead of paying off your car?
Q. This morning on Sydney radio station 2DAYFM a caller won $7000 in the $10,000 pop quiz. Then she was given the opportunity to give it all to World Vision to sponsor a child for the next 8 or so years. She ummed and ahhed about it, then Kyle and Jackie-O got Ray Martin (World Youth Day spokesman) to convince her to give it to charity. She ended up giving it away. Was it fair to do that? Would you have given it all away?

I am looking for advice for a good charity to help the poor and wondering what people think of World Vision?
Q. I am not a Christian so would prefer a non-denomination organization or at least one that does not push a particular religion. The most important aspects are the percentage of money that gets to the people who need it and also promoting practices such as farming that are environmentally friendly and sustainable. I have been giving money to World Vision for years but when I see some of the pictures of the farming practices, I wonder how much planning is going into sustainable practices. Thanks.

A. I think very highly of World Vision and have been sponsoring a child for years through them. They are based on Christian principles but help everyone, regardless of religion and do not push Christianity on them at all. I've seen several of their projects in the Middle East (helping both Christians and Muslims) and Africa and was impressed with how they are helping to make the communities sustainable. As far as farming, I visited a project of theirs in the Gaza Strip. It was a permaculture program where they are growing food with little water since water is so scarce there and the sea is salty so doesn't work for farming without desalination.

Is World Vision a reputable child sponsor organization?
Q. I am considering sponsoring a child and I was wondering if World Vision is a reputable child sponsorship organization. I Googled the organization and some "scam" headlines came up in the articles. I want my money to go to the child and the child's family and not into the pockets of the organization's president. Does anyone know if the organization is reputable? Please let me know, because I found this little girl from Armania that I really want to sponsor on the site. Thank you.

A. There are people scamming under the name of World Vision. The group itself seems to be quite reputable and is well established. It has one of the better source to source ratios and lower overhead expense than many other groups, so more of your money actually goes to the projects advertised. However, there are other people claiming to be from World Vision that ARE scammers. They really aren't from WV, but people send money thinking they are. Check your sources and make sure they're all the same, and make a few phone calls to make sure you've got the real World Vision and not the scammers. Samaritan's Purse is another good one.

Has anyone done anything with World Vision?
Q. Today, my family and I went to "Visions of Africa" by World Vision, which was an exhibit to raise awareness of children affected by AIDS in Africa. My husband is a marathon runner and was so moved, he wants to run his next marathon with Team World Vision to raise money for these children. I am considering training to run a half marathon with the team and would like to sponsor a child. Has anyone worked at all with this organization? If you did, what was the experience like?

A. Jane couldn't be more wrong nor farther from the truth. It's evident she's reacting to the fact it's a Christian organization and not what they are really doing. Without doubt she has definitely not been involved with World Vision nor knows their projects. I volunteered with them one summer overseas, and then when I was working with other organizations I saw many of their projects - in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and a couple of African countries. I visited a permaculture project of theirs in Gaza, where 99% of the population is Muslim. They were growing food with very minimal water since there are water shortages there (the water they have access to is the Mediterranean Sea which is too salty). Also in Gaza I visited an income-g [cont.]

why do people donate to the world vision scam?
Q. 1) Why do they have class A buildings for their corporate offices all around the world? (do you actually think they put these types of buildings up in Africa or Asia? Research what class A buildings are to get more insight) 2) Has any independent auditor evaluated the validity of their claims/how much money is actually going to developing nations? (who says they donate 81% or 90% of the money collected? Please don't tell me World Vision! We all know how organizations have a talent for falsifying financial information) If no auditor has checked their accounting information and financial records, you can almost be guaranteed that these people are lying- otherwise they could easily make the claims and back it up with concrete independent… [cont.]

A. Um, they are audited and I think the Attorney General would probably be alerted if there was a problem. You can view their audit online. You can also read about a case where they became aware of a problem and corrected it. I think they are fairly transparent for a large humanitarian organization. I suspect you have some other reason for not liking World Vision? If you don't like them as an organization, why don't you donate to someplace else? BTW, it is common for organizations like this to post their own financial statements on their websites. And you're correct that anyone can say anything. But it would be foolish to put this information up when even government officials can see if it's not true.

How much did it cost to sponsor a child (world vision) this financial year ending June 2009? (from Australia)?
Q. I am from australia and I am finally doing my taxes online. I have lost my annual tax receipt from world vision. They are sending out a new one, but I can finish doing it right now if I knew how much I paid. Did anyone else sponsor a child from world vision? If so, how much did it add up to in the last financial year with no additional donations added? Just the one sponsored child. ( My child is in Chad, if that makes a difference.)

A. Total cost of sponsorship for one child in 2009 was $520.00. The deductions are $10 per week.

A. You probably agreed to automatic withdrawal when you provided them with your account information. It is typically in the fine print. You might switch to Compassion International. Or if you stay w/ World Vision, send them a certified letter asking for whatever it is you want - cancellation, etc.

A. Yes, it is very active in the Philippines. My friend is sponsoring a child and she gets the child's progress report, even letters from the child himself. My colleague's husband works for World Vision and she was saying that her husband travels around the country a lot to visit their offices in the provinces and go to the sites were there sponsored children are based. When Region 6 was heavily devastated by the recent typhoons, he and other volunteers were there in Iloilo and nearby provinces to help the victims.

A. The purpose? To alert the public to the issues that negatively affect children worldwide, and to get money from sponsors. Teenagers could sponsor a child, but most do not have a steady income to guarantee the required monthly donation, or else they are saving for college. It is more likely that most sympathetic teens would wait until they are older and have a full-time job before they take on such a responsibility. Imagine if a child is told he has a sponsor, begins a correspondence, and then suddenly that sponsor disappears and another one steps in. Another reason teens might not want to sponsor a child is that when a Christian organization does this kind of work, it gives the appearance that children are only being helped as a tool for… [cont.]

Is World Vision one of the more reputable charities to sponsor children in poorer countries?
Q. I've considered sponsoring a less fortunate child, and want to ensure that the charity I select gives much of the proceeds to the child. Sometimes you hear stories about charities that send only a small percentage of what you donate to the child. Just wondering if anyone has any personal experience or advice in this area. Thanks!

A. I think it is, but I'd wait until someone gave you a more definitive answer. Check out UNICEF. They're a great organization for kids, and a lot of other charities run through them.

does world vision actually use its money to help poor/hungry kids?

A. In most charities this is true. The workers have to get paid for their work(they don't have to, but they do) Then the rest of it goes to charity. Sometimes that is big and sometimes it is small. The people who help the most is the salvation army. Their workers make hardly anything and they help out so much.

A. I think very highly of anyone who stands up for those who cannot speak for themselves, and refuses to trade one type of suffering for another.
