A disaster is a perceived tragedy, being either a natural calamity or man-made catastrophe. It is a hazard which has come to fruition. A hazard, in turn, is a situation which poses a level of threat to life, health, property, or that may deleteriously affect society or an environment.

In contemporary academia, disasters are seen as the consequence of inappropriately managed risk. These risks are the product of hazards and vulnerability. Hazards that strike in areas with low vulnerability are not considered a disaster, as is the case in uninhabited regions.

Developing countries suffer the greatest costs when a disaster hits – more than 95 percent of all deaths caused by disasters occur in developing countries, and losses due to natural disasters are 20 times greater (as a percentage of GDP) in developing countries than in industrialized countries.

A disaster can be defined as any tragic event with great loss stemming from events such as earthquakes, floods, catastrophic accidents, fires, or explosions.

What are some natural disasters that can be rewritten and added into a story?
Q. I'm writing a story (obviously) as you can tell by my question, and I was wondering: What are some natural disasters that can be worked into my story for a good plot twist. All Ideas are welcome. Also, it can really be any kind of disaster, I was just kind of leaning more toward natural disasters.

A. my friend's dad is writing a story that goes around the massive earthquake and firestorm that happened in San Fransisco. I would like to see someone write a story around Katrina...i don't think anyone has done it yet.

How can I get a job with FEMA or any other job dealing with Natural Disasters?
Q. I want a job that deals with natural disasters, and helping people. Whats the best path to this. Currently I am in my second year of college, have a 3.2 gpa and still undecided as a major. My interests include nature, natural disasters, traveling. Thanks for the help!

A. Did you just recently become interested in helping people? I ask because people who really want a career in helping others would research the various jobs & organizations that deal with this. The first step is to check out a few websites... I'm sure being in college & all you can figure out a few agencies and do the research on how to get a job or volunteer with them. Since this is not obvious to you, I did my own search and found out how to get FEMA employment info: . I'm sure if you're so dedicated you can find out additional info for the other agencies.

What part does science have with natural disasters?
Q. Earthquakes, for example, are the result of tectonic plates moving against each other and creating enough pressure to crack the earth's surface. Well, what about volcanic eruptions, tidal waves, and other natural disasters of the like?
Asked by eRiKa(: - Tue Sep 1 07:32:14 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Science tries to understand them all by observation, data accumulation and experimental procedures. Hopefully this could lead to better predictions and perhaps save a few lives, but I doubt it. The world still loses millions of lives annually from preventable causes. Politics and economics trump all.
